Wool and Nylon Yarn
Our great wool and nylon yarn contains a small percentage of nylon, which is blended with the main fibre. This gives the yarn additional strength and durability, without compromising its insulation properties. Not only is the nylon element of the yarn flexible, it can also help to soften the material.
Benefits of wool and nylon yarn
A blend of wool and nylon has a variety of benefits. These include:
- Helps garments to keep their shape: the nylon will help the garments ‘spring’ back into shape after wearing or washing.
- Longer lasting: nylon is hard wearing and can add durability to items that see a lot of wear and tear, such as socks.
Common wool and nylon yarn blends
The percentage of nylon blended with the wool can range from 10% or lower up to 25% or more. You probably won’t notice a huge difference between the different blends, although those with more nylon will have more of the benefits of the material. Some popular proportions or wool and nylon include:
80% wool 20% nylon yarn

70% wool 30% nylon yarn
Another popular blend, 70% wool and 30% nylon yarn has a higher percentage of nylon, and so will benefit from additional elasticity and durability. On the other hand, you will lose some of ‘wooliness’ of the yarn.
Merino cashmere nylon yarn
Sometimes you will find yarn that contains cashmere as well as nylon. Cashmere is a very soft fibre, but it doesn’t wear very well. Adding nylon to the mix results in a luxurious yarn that will really stand the test of time.
Wool and nylon sock yarn
One of the most popular applications for wool and nylon yarn is for making socks. Socks see a lot of wear and tear, and it’s important they are reinforced properly to make them last as long as possible.
One solution to creating hardwearing wool socks is to the knit or weave a strand of nylon thread through the sole of the foot. Having the nylon simply incorporated into your sock yarn is much less fuss.
Superwash merino nylon sock yarn
Often you will see superwash merino nylon sock yarn. This is yarn that’s been specially treated to make it machine washable. Superwash merino nylon sock yarn is a great choice for socks that are going to be worn a lot and need to be easy to clean.
